Hello,
I am Mariam, and I welcome you to my portfolio. I recently graduated from University for the Creative Arts with a BA (Hons) Fashion Design degree from London. These three years of experience have broadened my knowledge and understanding of not only garment construction but also the art of storytelling. I have learned how to connect life with art and convey my thoughts and perceptions to my audience. Every piece of work has a story behind it. My interest in fashion began during my foundation year at UCA Farnham, where I was introduced to various art subjects, including photography, fine arts, architecture, and fashion. I gained a solid foundation in each subject. Initially, my focus was on fine arts (painting), as I am a self-taught artist who has always enjoyed painting. However, I decided to take a risk and learn something new and enrolled in fashion, learning how to use a sewing machine to obtaining a bachelor’s degree made it clear that anything is possible. My greatest strength lies in my ability to paint, draw, and create clothing. I have embraced numerous challenges, even those that I initially lacked proficiency in, learning from mistakes and continuously improving. I firmly believe that everyone begins at a starting point. My design aesthetic is a harmonious fusion of art, nature, and tradition, often incorporating elements of playfulness and simplicity. I have a profound appreciation for colors, shapes, textures, shades, and patterns. I consistently find beauty in the random oddness of the world around me, whether on my way to university or in my daily life. |
During my time studying BA Fashion Design, I discovered a deep passion for textiles after three years of research, experimentation, and study. Reflecting on my projects and sketchbook, I consistently see textiles playing a significant role. Visiting the textile room at our university, I am intrigued by the textile perspective, as I see fashion and textiles as distinct yet powerful worlds. To connect my artistic side with fashion, I consistently incorporated it into my work. Whether it was screen-printing three meters of fabric with my designs, hand-painting my entire trousers in my second-year project, or bringing my sketchbook drawings to life through digital printing in my third-year pre-collection, these experiences instilled immense happiness and confidence in my work, which I consider one of my greatest strengths. Art serves as a medium through which I connect with my life, appreciating its raw and boundless freedom. I thrive on challenging myself, setting continuous goals, and embracing risks to foster improvement. Collaboration is a process I thoroughly enjoy, as it provides valuable feedback and insights into diverse creative processes. My strong desire to learn remains unwavering, and I remain open to new experiences and opportunities to broaden my knowledge. I welcome challenges that can enhance my skills. My aspiration is to collaborate with like-minded individuals, refine my skills, gain industry knowledge, and develop a brand that connects art and fashion. This brand should not only prioritize environmental sustainability but also ensure the fair treatment of workers. Thank you for reading, Mariam |
